Applications
Eugenol (CAS 97-53-0) is an aromatic phenylpropanoid found in clove oil and other plant essences, and it enjoys multifaceted applications: in dentistry it serves as a temporary filling material, analgesic, anti-inflammatory agent and root-canal sealer; in pharmaceuticals it is formulated into analgesics, cough syrups, antiseptics and antifungal preparations; in the flavor and food industry it acts as a warm, spicy flavouring for chewing gum, beverages, confectionery, processed meats and sauces while providing antioxidant protection for fats and oils; in cosmetics and perfumery it contributes sweet woody spicy notes; in agriculture it functions as an eco-friendly insecticide, fungicide, insect attractant and mosquito larvicide; in veterinary practice it is used to anaesthetise fish and crustaceans; in chemical manufacture it is a precursor for vanillin, isoeugenol, plastic stabilizers and bio-based polymer monomers; simultaneously it is being explored in nanomaterials for anticancer drug delivery, broad-spectrum antimicrobial coatings and green biomedical devices.
