  • Applications

    Citral (CAS 141-27-5; in practice the name often covers the citral pair geranial and neral, with 141-27-5 corresponding to geranial) is a strongly lemon-scented terpene aldehyde with wide utility: it flavors beverages, confectionery, baked goods, and dairy and boosts citrus top notes in fine fragrances, soaps, shampoos, detergents, household cleaners, air fresheners, and dish liquids; it is a key intermediate in aroma and pharma synthesis, enabling the pseudoionone → ionone/methyl ionone/irone route and, further downstream, vitamin A/retinoids, and it can be reduced/oxidized to geraniol/nerol or the corresponding acids; its mild antimicrobial and deodorizing effects are leveraged in “natural” cleaners, oral-care formats, and insect-repellent formulations; it also serves as an analytical reference and an odor-masking additive in industrial products; it is GRAS by the FDA for flavor use but is a known skin sensitizer subject to EU/IFRA labeling and concentration limits; in formulation it is dosed sparingly, stabilized with antioxidants, protected from light/oxygen, and kept away from amines (Schiff-base formation).
