Applications
4-Allylanisole (also known as estragole or methyl chavicol, CAS 140-67-0) is an aromatic monoterpene naturally occurring in basil, tarragon and anise seeds and industrially purified as a food-flavour additive that imparts a sweet, anise-like note to candies, beverages, ice cream and dry seasonings; a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, soaps and cosmetics due to its good volatility and lasting scent; an odor-masking solvent in personal-care formulations; a versatile intermediate for synthesizing anethole, anisaldehyde and other pharma-, veterinary- and agrochemical derivatives; an insect-behaviour modifier that at low doses attracts pollinating bees and butterflies but at higher concentrations repels termites and mosquitoes through olfactory disruption; a subject of environmental-biochemical studies on hepatotoxicity and metabolic pathways; and a popular component in aromatherapy where it is blended into scented candles, diffused oils and spa atmospheres for relaxation and upscale ambience creation.
