Applications
Hexanoic acid (also called caproic acid, CAS 142-62-1) is a medium-chain fatty acid with diverse applications: in the food industry it serves as a flavor enhancer and cheese- or butter-like aroma compound and as a feedstock for fruity esters; in aquaculture and animal nutrition it is used as an antimicrobial feed additive that improves gut microbiota and growth performance; in cosmetics and fragrances its esters impart sweet, fruity notes used in perfumes, creams and hair-care products; in chemical manufacturing it functions as an intermediate for plasticizers, surfactants, lubricants, solvents, corrosion inhibitors and certain pharmaceuticals, and it contributes to the synthesis of caprolactam and nylon polymers; additionally, its intrinsic antifungal and antibacterial properties are being explored for active food packaging and biopreservatives.
