Applications
Myrtenol (CAS 515-00-4) is a bicyclic monoterpenoid alcohol with a piney, herbal, slightly camphoraceous odor used widely as a fragrance ingredient in fine fragrances and toiletries (perfumes, body washes, shampoos, soaps) and in home and air-care products (cleaners, surface sprays, candles, diffusers) to build or modulate coniferous, fougère, chypre, citrus and minty–aromatic accords; it blends well with lavender, rosemary, sage, eucalyptus/eucalyptol and citrus terpenes, smoothing harsh terpenic edges and acting as a top-to-heart note modifier; in flavor applications it is dosed at very low levels to impart piney, minty-woody nuances to gin/tonic, citrus peel, herbal and confectionery profiles (subject to local flavor regulations); in synthesis it serves as a chiral building block and intermediate for esters/urethanes such as myrtenyl acetate and for diverse fragrance, pharmaceutical and agrochemical scaffolds; technically, myrtenol is soluble in ethanol and oils but only sparingly in water, is prone to oxidation on air/light exposure and should be stored cool and well sealed with antioxidant; use is typically guided by IFRA and market-specific safety/labeling rules, supply can be from natural turpentine/pine oil or by synthesis, and research has reported some antimicrobial activity.
