    Chavicol (CAS 501-92-8) is a natural phenylpropanoid with a warm spicy–herbal odor, used primarily in fragrances and personal care to build, reinforce, or modulate phenolic–spicy notes in soaps, fine perfumes, and toiletries; in food and beverage flavoring, chavicol and its derivatives are applied at trace levels as flavor modulators or as precursors to methyl chavicol (estragole) and related ethers/esters that deliver anise–basil–balsamic nuances; as an organic synthesis building block, its activated phenolic ring and allyl side chain make it a versatile intermediate for pharmaceuticals, specialty aroma chemicals, and functional materials; in research it is investigated for antioxidant and antimicrobial phenolic behavior, informing applications in active packaging, bio-based preservatives, and natural-origin additives; it is also used as a GC–MS/HPLC reference standard for profiling essential oils rich in Piper betle or Ocimum; any use in foods, cosmetics, or environmental contact should comply with local regulatory limits and safety guidance.
