Applications
p,α,α-Trimethylbenzyl alcohol (CAS 1197-01-9) is a tertiary aromatic alcohol with a faint pleasant odour that chemists value as a bulky building block for woody, amber and musk fragrance molecules; it undergoes alkylation, esterification and O-alkylation to give low-volatility esters, ethers and carbonates used as perfume fixatives, cosmetic odour stabilisers and even flavour modifiers; in polymer technology the compound serves as an efficient chain-starter or chain-stopper for acrylics, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes and epoxies, and is a precursor to photoinitiators, hindered phenolic antioxidants and UV absorbers for plastics, rubber and water-borne coatings; its high solvating power toward aromatic resins, thermal stability and high boiling point also make it useful in specialty electronic cleaners, UV-curable ink diluents, tailor-made plasticizers, selective extraction solvents for rare metals, while facile conversion to the corresponding chloride or sulfate allows the preparation of ionic derivatives that show promising antibacterial, antifungal and insecticidal properties for pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications.
