Applications
Tricosane (CAS 638-67-5) is a straight-chain C23H48 waxy solid with a melting point around 47–49 °C and is widely used as a phase-change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage and temperature regulation in paints, plasters, building materials, microencapsulated textiles, packaging, and electronics operating near this range; it serves as a component in paraffin-wax blends to tune hardness, softening point, and gloss for candles, polishes, moisture-barrier and corrosion-protective coatings, and as a dry/grease lubricant and mold-release agent for plastics and rubber; analytically, it is an n-alkane reference for GC/GC-MS retention index and time calibration and is used as an internal/benchmark standard in petroleum, polymer, and environmental analyses; in R&D it acts as a model compound for crystallization kinetics, phase behavior, and thermal analysis (DSC), as a reference or component in studies of surface hydrocarbons in biology (e.g., insects), and as an inert hydrophobic phase for materials testing and for microencapsulation and wax-polymer composite systems.
