Applications
Methyl trans-cinnamate (methyl (E)-3-phenyl-2-propenoate, CAS 1754-62-7) is a naturally occurring aromatic ester isolated or synthesized from cinnamon, star anise and other essential oils, celebrated for its sweet, slightly spicy scent; in the food industry it serves as a flavoring additive for candies, baked goods, beverages and tobacco as well as a flavor fixer that stabilizes cinnamon- or vanilla-containing products, while in cosmetics and perfumery it provides a warm base note, prolongs fragrance persistence and masks solvent off-odors, additionally exhibiting UV-B absorption that makes it a useful co-active in sunscreens, lipsticks and skin creams to boost SPF; in agriculture it is investigated as a bio-pesticide thanks to insect-repellent and antifungal activity; in pharmaceuticals methyl trans-cinnamate functions as an intermediate for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant derivatives and is incorporated into nano-delivery systems to enhance the bioavailability of polyphenolic drugs; furthermore, owing to its unsaturated ester moiety the compound participates in polymerization, copolymerization and cross-esterification reactions, supporting the production of fragrant plastics, printing inks, coatings and smart materials.
