Natural, high-purity menthol extracted from Cornmint (Mentha arvensis): colorless, cooling crystals with a characteristic minty-sweet scent and a clean, camphoraceous, nose-clearing facet. It diffuses quickly and leaves a long-lasting deep-cooling afterfeel. Soluble in ethanol and oils, sparingly soluble in water; softens/melts around 41–44 °C, making it easy to handle during compounding. Versatile for perfumery (to impart a “cooling” effect in the top note), cooling balms/gels, inhalation products, toothpaste, chewing gum, soaps, and household cleaners.

Menthol brings a “nose-clearing” coolness with strong diffusion in the top note; it pairs with citrus/bergamot to boost freshness, lavender–rosemary–sage for a herbal fougère direction, and aldehydes/ozone plus white musks to heighten cleanliness. Blend with spearmint (carvone) or eucalyptol to round out the mint profile; with pine, cypress, cedarwood, or sandalwood to add depth; and with vanilla–cocoa for gourmand chocolate-mint variations. Use at low levels to avoid overpowering (reference 0.05–0.30% in fine fragrance; functional products can be higher as needed) and pre-dilute to 10–20% in DPG or TEC for accurate dosing.

Aromatherapy

Menthol provides a deep cooling sensation that helps clear breathing, reduce nasal congestion, and noticeably promote alertness; it can also help soothe headaches, muscle tension, neck–shoulder soreness, and mild itching or irritation on the skin. Use therapeutically by inhalation/steam (1–2 drops in a bowl of warm water or a diffuser; may be blended with Eucalyptus or Peppermint to enhance the “open-nose” effect), or apply topically once pre-diluted to 0.5–2% in a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond) or a suitable cosmetic solvent. Avoid the eye area and mucous membranes; patch-test on a small area before use; not recommended for young children or during pregnancy.
