Applications
Methyl 4-methylbenzoate (CAS 99-75-2, also known as methyl p-toluate) is used primarily as a versatile intermediate in organic synthesis and manufacturing: it can be hydrolyzed to 4-methylbenzoic acid (p-toluic acid), reduced to 4-methylbenzyl alcohol or 4-methylbenzaldehyde, or converted into amides, hydrazides, and other benzoyl derivatives; accordingly it serves as a building block for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals bearing a p-tolyl motif, a precursor (via the acid) to 4-methylbenzoyl chloride and related acylbenzoyl/photoinitiator chemistries, a chain-stopper in polyester production (e.g., tuning PET/alkyd molecular weight via transesterification), a component in the development of polyaryl and liquid-crystal materials, and as a reference standard in analytical methods (HPLC/GC) and a model substrate for studies of hydrolysis kinetics, transesterification, Grignard additions, and para-directed electrophilic aromatic substitution; it is also employed in the preparation of dyes, fragrance intermediates, and specialty additives where a robust, easy-to-handle para-methyl benzoate ester with moderate volatility is desired.
