Applications
Furfural (CAS 98-01-1) is an almond-scented organic compound derived from lignocellulosic feedstocks such as bagasse or rice hulls, and it sees broad industrial use: it is the key precursor for furfuryl alcohol and heat-resistant furan resins, serves as an extraction solvent in petroleum refining, separates butadiene from C4 streams for synthetic rubber production, formulates specialty metal-working solvents, binds foundry sand for casting molds, imparts caramel-like flavor to foods, acts as an intermediate for agrochemicals, dyes, corrosion inhibitors and lubricant additives, and is now being investigated as a bio-based platform molecule for the manufacture of renewable fuels and sustainable polymers.
