Applications
Carveol, cis-(-)- (CAS 1197-06-4) is a chiral monoterpenoid alcohol widely used in flavor and fragrance applications for its cool, minty, herbal, slightly woody–citrus profile, refining and lifting green–mint facets in fine fragrances (citrus, fougère, herbal), cosmetics, soaps, detergents, air care, and deodorizing products; in foods it is applied at trace–low levels to round spearmint/herbal notes and soften bitterness. In research-oriented uses, cis-(-)-carveol has been investigated for antimicrobial/antifungal, antioxidant, and insect-repellent activities and as a skin permeation enhancer; in synthesis it serves as a convenient precursor to esters (e.g., carveyl acetate) and other terpenoid derivatives or as a chiral building block for asymmetric transformations, and it functions as a reference standard in chiral chromatographic separations and sensory enantio-discrimination studies.
