Applications
Nonadecane (n‑nonadecane, CAS 629-92-5) is a straight‑chain C19 paraffinic alkane that is solid at ambient conditions and melts near room temperature, making it valuable as a phase‑change material for thermal energy storage and temperature regulation (bulk waxes, plates, microencapsulated PCM) in building materials, smart textiles, temperature‑sensitive packaging, and electronics; it serves as an n‑alkane reference standard in gas chromatography for Kovats/linear retention index calibration, GC/GC‑MS method development, and petroleum boiling‑range characterization; it is also a model compound for studies of paraffin crystallization, nucleation, melting in confined geometries, wetting, and polymer–paraffin composites; it can be impregnated into porous matrices (gypsum, cement, wood) to add thermal inertia, used in PCM microcapsules/slurries for HVAC, in calorimetry to calibrate enthalpy of fusion and thermal properties, and as a hydrocarbon marker in studies of natural waxes and petroleum products; its chemical inertness, hydrophobicity, and low volatility also enable use as an inert medium in lubrication and materials testing.
