Applications
Ethyl benzoate (CAS 93-89-0) is the pleasantly fruity ester of benzoic acid used extensively as a flavor additive to impart banana, grape and apple notes to beverages, chewing gum and confectionery; as a fragrance ingredient supplying sweet balsamic nuances to perfumes, soaps and detergents; as an intermediate solvent for alkyd resins, nitrocellulose lacquers, inks and coatings; as an odor-masking agent and carrier in pesticides and insect repellents; as a building block in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes and surfactants; and as a reference compound in GC-MS analysis or a benign solvent in materials research owing to its good solvency and low toxicity.
