Applications
(1S,5R)-Carvyl acetate (CAS 1134-95-8) is a monoterpene ester with a fresh herbal–spearmint odor and woody, spicy, citrus-peel facets; it is widely used in perfumery to boost freshness, diffusion and smoothness in spearmint, caraway/dill, citrus, fougère and cologne accords for fine fragrances, soaps, shampoos, cleaners, fabric softeners, candles and air-care, and it can be microencapsulated for slow release in detergents; in flavors and oral care it rounds mint profiles, softens menthol harshness and adds green-herbal nuances in confectionery, chewing gum, beverages, syrups, baked goods and toothpaste/mouthwash at trace-to-ppm levels; in formulation it blends well with citrus and terpenoid materials (limonene, carvone, linalyl acetate, eucalyptol, α-terpineol) but requires stability checks because esters may hydrolyze under alkaline or high-heat conditions; for synthesis and research, the defined (1S,5R) configuration makes it useful as a chiral building block for related terpenoids and as a reference for chiral analysis, sensory work and delivery-system development, typically obtained by esterifying carveol from essential oils or via total synthesis, with use subject to applicable safety and regulatory guidance.
