  • Applications

Butyric acid (butanoic acid, CAS 107-92-6) is a short-chain fatty acid with a strong buttery odor whose versatility spans flavour and fragrance formulations (butter, cheese, yogurt, fruit, confectionery, beverage enhancers), production of butyrate esters for perfumes, coatings, inks, cellulose acetate butyrate, plasticizers and specialty resins, preservation and acidification of animal feed and silage to support gut health, precursor for pharmaceuticals (sodium/ethyl butyrate for gastrointestinal disorders, pro-drug and antibiotic synthesis), histone-deacetylase-inhibiting reagent in molecular biology, extraction solvent, organic intermediate for pesticides, dyes, leather tanning, adhesives, as well as an additive that accelerates biodegradation in wastewater treatment and biopolymer processes.
