Applications
Farnesene (mixture of isomers, CAS 502-61-4) is a high-value sesquiterpene utilized broadly: in fragrance and cosmetic formulations it delivers the fresh green-apple, pear and floral notes that lift perfumes, shampoos and soaps; in food and beverage products it serves as a natural fruit flavor enhancer in candies, baked goods and soft drinks; in agriculture it functions as a semiochemical pheromone—especially the apple aphid alarm pheromone—either to lure beneficial insects or repel pests, enabling eco-friendly pest management; in pharma and biomedicine it is explored as a versatile intermediate for antibacterial, anti-inflammatory derivatives and as an antioxidant active in skincare; and, owing to its bio-based origin and linear hydrocarbon skeleton, farnesene is increasingly employed as a renewable monomer for polyethylene-like bioplastics, as a pliable plasticizer and lubricant, and as a drop-in biohydrocarbon for aviation and gasoline fuels, thereby reducing reliance on petroleum and lowering carbon emissions.
