Applications
1-Octanol (CAS 111-87-5) is a straight-chain eight-carbon fatty alcohol that finds broad industrial use as a neutral solvent for resins and varnishes, a coconut- or orange-like flavoring agent in food, a plasticizer and textile auxiliary in synthetic fiber production, a viscosity-modifying lubricant in metal-working fluids, a key precursor for fragrance esters in perfumes, a non-ionic surfactant component in cosmetics and cleansers, a PVC flexibilizer, and a pharmaceutical excipient that enhances dermal penetration; it is also employed in chemical analysis as a reference phase and in biological laboratories as a probe for lipid adsorption studies.
