    Axit hexanoic (còn gọi là caproic acid, CAS 142-62-1) là một acid béo mạch trung bình được ứng dụng rộng rãi: trong công nghiệp thực phẩm, nó được dùng làm chất điều vị và tạo hương pho-mát, bơ cũng như là nguồn nguyên liệu tạo ester thơm trái cây; trong nuôi trồng thủy sản và thức ăn chăn nuôi, nó đóng vai trò phụ gia kháng khuẩn, cải thiện hệ vi sinh đường ruột và hiệu suất tăng trưởng; trong lĩnh vực mỹ phẩm và hương liệu, các ester của axit này mang mùi trái cây ngọt ngào, được khai thác cho nước hoa, kem dưỡng da và sản phẩm chăm sóc tóc; trong công nghiệp hóa chất, axit hexanoic là tiền chất để sản xuất plasticizer, chất hoạt động bề mặt, chất bôi trơn, dung môi, chất ức chế ăn mòn và một số dược phẩm, đồng thời góp phần trong quy trình tổng hợp caprolactam và polyme nylon; ngoài ra, khả năng kháng nấm và kháng khuẩn tự nhiên khiến nó được nghiên cứu cho bao bì thực phẩm và chất bảo quản sinh học.
