Extracted from the dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum—a species indigenous to Indonesia—clove bud essential oil opens with a warm, spicy-sweet, intensely rich aroma that recalls traditional herbal apothecaries and the familiar kitchen spice. Its primary constituents are eugenol (70–85%), eugenyl acetate, and β-caryophyllene, noted for cleansing, antifungal, and comforting properties.

In aromatherapy, this oil is used to ease fatigue, stimulate the senses, and soothe tension. In personal care, it appears in toothpastes, mouthwashes, antibacterial soaps, and cleansing rinses for its naturally purifying character. In perfumery, clove provides a masculine, phenolic accent; its eugenol content is also a building block for synthesizing vanillin, the iconic vanilla note.

Blending

Because clove is strong, pungent, and assertive, treat it as an accent in blends: dilute to 1–10% within your composition and use sparingly. It softens and rounds florals (Rose, Geranium, Ylang-Ylang), adds depth and realism to woods, resins, and fruity accords, and is a signature nuance in Oriental/Amber and Gourmand creations—warm, spicy, and intriguingly sweet.

Aromatherapy

Historically, clove bud oil has been used for toothaches and general aches, to ease respiratory discomfort, support digestion, and for its antimicrobial and antioxidant potential. In aromatherapy, it may calm the mind, reduce stress, and support deeper, more restful sleep. In skincare, it’s cited for anti-aging, blemish care, brightening, and moisturising effects. Safety: always perform a patch test to check for sensitivity, and when applying to skin, follow IFRA guidance for appropriate dilution to avoid irritation.

Use only under the guidance of a doctor and aromatherapy specialists.
Do not self-administer essential oils for ingestion or medical treatment.
