Bergamot essential oil appears in most Eau de Cologne fragrances and many citrus-forward perfumes. Its scent is bright and slightly bitter-cool, with herbal facets and a gentle woody nuance that recalls a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Bergamot is grown mainly in southern Italy. The trees need at least three years before the fruit meets quality standards for oil production. The oil is obtained by cold pressing—a premium, no-heat method that preserves the original aroma. Typically, about 200 kg of fresh peel yields 1 kg of essential oil.

Compared with other citrus notes, bergamot smells more elegant, delicate, and multi-layered. Perfumers are enamored with it and have created countless compositions around this material—one reason Italy has worked to make bergamot oil a national symbol.

Blending

You’ll find bergamot in many citrus-toned fragrances, usually as a top note, often paired with oakmoss, patchouli, or labdanum. Because bergamot can be brisk, it’s commonly rounded with deeper notes like amber or vanilla for balance. Blended with lavender, it evokes the Mediterranean.

Aromatherapy

Aromatically, bergamot is known for soothing the nerves, easing pain and anxiety, promoting relaxation, and lifting the mood. It also has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is used as a traditional remedy for nasal congestion and mild dermatitis. In Italy, it has long been employed in folk care for psoriasis and minor fungal issues.

Use only under the guidance of a doctor and aromatherapy specialists.
Do not self-administer essential oils for ingestion or medical treatment.
