Applications
trans,trans-Farnesol (CAS 106-28-5) is an acyclic sesquiterpene alcohol used broadly as a fragrance ingredient, odor harmonizer, and mild fixative in fine fragrances, cosmetics, and personal/home care products, where it boosts and rounds floral notes (jasmine, muguet, rose), enhances substantivity, and helps mask malodors; at trace levels it also serves as a flavor and flavor modifier in foods and beverages; in certain deodorant and oral-care formulations, farnesol is leveraged for its anti-biofilm and microbe-inhibiting properties to help control odor and plaque; in life-science research it is a model isoprenoid for probing the mevalonate pathway, protein farnesylation, and Candida quorum sensing, and a building block/precursor to farnesyl derivatives (halides, acetate, pyrophosphate) used in prenylation chemistry, terpene synthesis, and bio-probe preparation; in fragrance technology it is commonly microemulsified or encapsulated to improve oxidative stability and control release in consumer products; regulatory-wise, it is a listed fragrance allergen requiring labeling in the EU, so use levels are typically set in line with IFRA guidance and safety assessments for the intended matrix.
