Applications
Neoisomenthol (CAS 490-99-3) is a monoterpenoid alcohol and menthol isomer used mainly as a flavor and fragrance ingredient to impart a clean minty note and cooling sensation in confectionery, chewing gum, beverages, dairy, and, where permitted, vaping/heat‑not‑burn tobacco; it is widely applied in oral care (toothpastes, mouthwashes) and cosmetics/personal care (shampoos, body washes, deodorants, shave gels) to deliver freshness via TRPM8 cold‑receptor activation; it also serves as a taste/smell modulator for bitterness masking and a “fresh” lift in orally administered pharmaceuticals or throat sprays, and to provide topical cooling in dermal formulations; in pharmaceuticals and organic synthesis, neoisomenthol functions as an intermediate/chiral building block for stereoselective synthesis and for preparing menthyl esters, and as a reference standard and isomer comparator in sensory, receptor, and chromatographic studies; it is commonly blended with menthol, isomenthol, or odorless coolants (WS‑3, WS‑23, Frescolat, etc.) to tune intensity, longevity, and profile, with adherence to FEMA/IFRA limits and local food–drug regulations, plus compatibility testing in the target matrix.
