Applications
Myristic acid (C14H28O2, also known as tetradecanoic acid, CAS 544-63-8) is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid widely employed in cosmetics and personal-care formulations as a surfactant, thickener, emulsifier and stabilizer in soaps, creams and shaving foams; in food technology as a flavoring compound, structuring fat and aroma carrier; in pharmaceuticals as an excipient, liposome component, drug-delivery matrix and microencapsulation coating; in industry for lubricants, biodegradable hydraulic fluids, synthetic esters, candle waxes, rust inhibitors and metalworking additives; in agriculture as a solvent, emulsifier and spreading adjuvant; it is also used as an analytical standard, precursor for myristate esters in perfumery, flavorings, plastics and rubber, and as a biochemical tool for studying protein myristoylation.
