Applications
Methyl benzoate (CAS 93-58-3) is a fragrant ester of benzoic acid widely used as a sweet-floral note and fixative in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and deodorants; as a flavor additive for candies, beverages and processed fruit; as a solvent and versatile intermediate in organic synthesis—especially in the manufacture of pyrethroid insecticides, dyes and pharmaceuticals; as an insect attractant for trapping orchid bees and fruit flies in pollination research and pest management; and also as a preservative, odor stabilizer and analytical reference material in environmental chemistry laboratories.
