Applications
Lauric Acid (CAS 143-07-7) is a saturated C12 fatty acid widely used as a feedstock and intermediate in the production of soaps and surfactants for detergents. In cosmetics and personal care, its salts (for example sodium laurate) and derived esters act as surfactants and emulsifiers, while fatty esters derived from lauric acid serve as cleansing agents and emollients. Lauric acid is a key precursor for lauryl alcohol and related surfactant intermediates, which are important surfactants used in cleaners, shampoos, and other foaming products. In industrial manufacturing, derivatives of lauric acid function as plasticizers and lubricants for polymers and as processing aids in coatings and adhesives. Additionally, lauric acid–derived esters are used in coatings, inks, and specialty formulations to improve emulsification, stability, and compatibility.
