  • Applications

Ethyl linolenate (CAS 1191-41-9) is the ethyl ester of alpha‑linolenic acid (omega‑3) and is used as an emollient and skin/hair conditioning agent in cosmetics, a fragrance/flavor component in aroma formulations, a lipophilic carrier and solvent for topical and related formulations (also investigated as a transdermal penetration enhancer), a reagent/intermediate to introduce an unsaturated C18 chain in organic synthesis, a reference or internal standard for FAEE analysis by GC/LC‑MS and for lipid metabolism studies, and a model substrate for auto‑oxidation/drying‑oil polymerization research and R&D on vegetable‑oil‑derived ethyl‑ester biodiesel; owing to its high unsaturation it is typically stabilized with antioxidants and stored tightly closed, protected from light and heat.
