Applications
Carvacryl methyl ether (CAS 6379-73-3) is used primarily as a flavor and fragrance ingredient imparting warm, herbal, spicy, oregano/thyme-like notes to perfumes, deodorants, soaps, detergents, candles and, where permitted, food applications such as savory seasonings, processed meats, snacks, soups and beverages; it also serves as a versatile synthetic intermediate: the O-methyl ether protects the phenolic group of carvacrol for selective transformations followed by demethylation, and it is a convenient building block for terpene derivatives, pharmaceutical and agrochemical candidates (antimicrobial, antifungal, insect-repellent) and other functional additives; in R&D and testing it is used as a reference or internal standard for GC/GC-MS, as a model substrate for aromatic ether O-demethylation, oxidation and electrophilic substitution, and as an active scent in encapsulated or controlled-release systems for active packaging, coatings, cleaners and air-care products; use is subject to safety limits and applicable IFRA/food regulations.
