Applications
Decanoic acid (capric acid, CAS 334-48-5) is a medium-chain fatty acid with a broad spectrum of uses: it is esterified to create pineapple, strawberry and creamy flavours for food products; serves the cosmetic sector in soaps, surfactants, emulsifiers and emollients offering antimicrobial and deodorising effects; acts as a pharmaceutical excipient in MCT oils that support ketogenic diets for epilepsy and Alzheimer’s therapy; functions industrially as a lubricant, plasticiser, PVC heat stabiliser, mould-release agent, precursor of glycidyl esters for epoxy resins and of metal caprates (Zn, Zr, Ti, etc.) used as catalysts, paint driers and surface modifiers; operates in agriculture as a carrier for veterinary drugs and a pathogen-suppressing feed additive; and is further utilised in phase-change thermal storage materials, green solvents, rare-metal extractants, as well as being investigated as an antiviral, antifungal agent and a building block for biodegradable biomaterials.
