Applications
Benzyl alcohol (CAS 100-51-6) is a mildly volatile aromatic solvent whose versatility makes it valuable in numerous sectors: it lowers viscosity and improves flow, gloss and adhesion in paints, coatings, printing inks, epoxy and polyurethane resins; in pharmaceuticals it serves as a low-toxicity bacteriostatic preservative and a solvent for poorly soluble actives in injectable, topical and otic preparations; in cosmetics it imparts a subtle floral scent, works as a humectant and fragrance carrier in creams, shampoos and perfumes; in food processing it is permitted as a flavour additive delivering almond-like notes; in analytical chemistry it is a neutral solvent for chromatography and a building block for benzyl esters and ethers; additionally, benzyl alcohol is found in paint strippers, photographic developers, wool and silk finishing baths, agricultural miticides, and corrosion-inhibiting fluids used in oil and gas production.
