  • Applications

Benzoic acid (CAS 65-85-0) is a simple aromatic carboxylic acid originally isolated from gum benzoin but now chiefly manufactured synthetically, and its broad antimicrobial efficacy drives numerous applications: in the food industry it and its sodium or potassium salts act as approved preservatives for soft drinks, fruit juices, jams, pickles and ketchup, extending shelf life by suppressing yeast, mold and bacterial growth; in pharmaceuticals it is formulated into antifungal creams, ointments for dermatological conditions and serves as an intermediate for synthesizing various active ingredients; the cosmetic sector uses it as a pH adjuster, mild deodorizing agent and preservative in lotions, shampoos and deodorants; industrially it functions as a building block for alkyd and polyester resins, a curing accelerator for epoxy systems, a corrosion-inhibiting additive in engine coolants, a precursor to dyes and plasticizers, as well as a reference standard and versatile reagent in organic chemistry research.
