Applications
Pinocamphone (CAS 547-60-4) is a natural monoterpene ketone found in Hyssopus officinalis (hyssop) essential oil and other Lamiaceae taxa; in research and industry it is used as a GC–MS reference/analytical standard for fingerprinting, quantification, and quality control of essential oils, as a chemotaxonomic marker and authenticity indicator; it is explored in fragrance/flavor R&D for camphoraceous, herbal facets, although commercial use is tightly constrained due to proconvulsant neurotoxicity (GABA_A receptor antagonism); in life-science studies pinocamphone serves as a model to probe monoterpene-ketone–induced seizures and neurochemical mechanisms; additionally, reported antimicrobial, insecticidal/acaricidal and repellent activities suggest potential roles in natural preservative systems or biopesticide concepts, but any application requires rigorous safety assessment, dose control and regulatory compliance (e.g., IFRA/REACH and restrictions in foods, essential oils, aromatherapy); it is not an approved drug.
