    DL-Menthol, CAS 89-78-1, is the racemic form of menthol with a characteristic cool mint aroma that finds broad use in pharmaceuticals (as an antitussive, decongestant, topical analgesic and antipruritic), in food and beverages (imparting a refreshing flavor to candies, chewing gum, chocolate, ice cream and soft drinks), in cosmetics and personal-care items (toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoos, shower gels, after-shave lotions), as well as in fragrance, tobacco, aromatherapy and insect-repellent formulations; it is also employed as a chiral reference standard and coolant medium in chemical research, providing instant cooling sensation, clean scent masking off-odors, and enhancing sensory appeal and commercial value of finished products.
