Applications
Ethyl decanoate (CAS 110-38-3) is the ethyl ester of capric acid and is valued across multiple industries for its soft fruity scent; naturally occurring in wine, beer and other fermented beverages, it is widely added to soft drinks, confectionery, dairy desserts, canned fruit and sauces as a flavouring agent, while in oenology its concentration is monitored as a quality marker and fermentation indicator to fine-tune ageing conditions and enhance the bouquet of premium wines; in cosmetics it serves as a fragrance modifier and solvent for perfumes, creams and shampoos, providing a warm, clean note; thanks to good oil solubility and low toxicity it is further used as a plasticiser and carrier in veterinary formulations, as an extraction solvent for natural aroma compounds, and is being explored as a biodiesel component capable of improving the cold-flow properties of biofuels.
