Applications
Anethole (CAS 4180-23-8) is a naturally occurring aromatic ether that dominates the essential oils of anise, fennel and star anise, and it finds broad use as a sweet licorice-like flavor in foods, candies, alcoholic beverages such as ouzo or pastis, cough syrups and toothpastes; as a fragrance component in perfumes, soaps and household cleaners; as a chemical intermediate for producing anisaldehyde, anisic acid, specialty surfactants and engineering plastics; meanwhile its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities enable incorporation into skin-care cosmetics, veterinary drugs and gastrointestinal or respiratory remedies; it is also under study as an insect attractant, aquafeed additive and biocorrosion inhibitor.
