Applications
2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol (4-vinylguaiacol) is a fragrant phenolic compound with a distinctive smoky clove-like note that is widely employed as a natural flavor in wheat beers, wines, coffee, cocoa, soft drinks and baked goods, added to tobacco, chewing gum, mouthwashes, perfumes and cosmetic products to impart warm spicy woody nuances; beyond flavor and fragrance it serves as an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis, a precursor for heat-resistant polyvinylphenol resins, a cross-linking agent in epoxy adhesives, an antioxidant in lubricating oils, an adhesion-improving additive for printing inks, a sensory marker in food aroma research, and is investigated as a lignin-derived biobuilding block for the development of sustainable polymer materials.
