Applications
Tetracosane (n‑tetracosane, C24H50, CAS 646‑31‑1) is a chemically inert straight‑chain alkane with a melting range near 50 °C, used as a constituent of paraffin/wax for candles, polishes, moisture‑barrier and anticorrosion coatings; a friction modifier/lubricity component and model compound in tribology; a phase‑change material (PCM) for mid‑temperature thermal energy storage in building materials, thermoregulating textiles, thermal packaging, and electronics thermal management (often via microencapsulation or composites with silica, porous graphite, or polymers); an n‑alkane standard in gas chromatography to build Kovats/linear retention index ladders and to normalize retention times for hydrocarbon, essential oil, and petroleum analyses; a reference for DSC/melting‑point calibration and for studies of crystallization, solid–solid transitions, and self‑assembled monolayers on carbon/mica; and as a representative “wax” in research on wax precipitation/paraffin deposition in pipelines and in creating hydrophobic/superhydrophobic alkane‑based surfaces.
