Applications
p-Mentha-1,3,8-triene (CAS 18368-95-1) is a monoterpene hydrocarbon with a fresh herbal–citrus odor, used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, soaps, detergents, deodorizers and air-care products to boost brightness and diffusion of top notes; as a low-level flavoring component to reinforce citrus, minty or spicy nuances (subject to local regulations); as a bio-based terpene solvent for resins, oils and waxes in cleaners, industrial degreasers and inks; as a chemical intermediate to access oxygenated terpenes (e.g., via hydration/epoxidation to terpene alcohols), to generate p-cymene by aromatization, or to introduce functionality onto polymers/silicones through ene and hydrosilylation reactions; it is also investigated as a botanical insect repellent/insecticidal agent and contributes to the antimicrobial effects of certain essential-oil formulations; additionally it serves as an analytical reference in GC/GC–MS for identification, quantification and quality control of essential oils, flavors and consumer products; note that it is volatile, flammable, and prone to autoxidation to peroxides, so storage typically requires tight closure, light/oxygen exclusion and, where appropriate, antioxidants.
