Applications
Methyl linoleate (CAS 112-63-0), the methyl ester of linoleic acid from vegetable oils, is used as a key FAME component in biodiesel to enhance cold-flow and biodegradability; as a bio-based feedstock that can be epoxidized, hydroxylated, acrylated, or polymerized to yield precursors for bioresins, plasticizers, reactive diluents, oxidative-cleavage products (polyols and diacids), and complex esters/estolides for biodegradable lubricants; as an intermediate for surfactant and emulsifier manufacture (e.g., via maleation or sulfonation followed by neutralization) and as part of methylated seed oil adjuvants to improve agrochemical wetting, adhesion, and leaf penetration; in food science and analytics it serves as a model substrate for lipid peroxidation, a GC/GC-MS reference standard, and a common lipoxygenase substrate for antioxidant testing via 234 nm conjugated diene formation; it is also used as a low-VOC FAME solvent in cleaners/degreasers and, on a limited basis, as an emollient or carrier in personal care, although more oxidation-stable derivatives are often preferred.
