  • Applications

Isopropyl myristate (IPM, CAS 110-27-0) is the ester of isopropanol and myristic acid, valued in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and technical fields for imparting a light, dry-silky emollience, acting as an oil carrier and fragrance dispersant, and markedly enhancing skin penetration; IPM improves spreadability and absorption of creams, lotions, serums, make-up and sunscreens, allowing actives such as vitamins, corticosteroids and insecticides to cross the stratum corneum; pediculicide and scabicide products use it to dissolve pyrethroids or malathion, or even alone to disrupt the lipid envelope of lice; in transdermal therapy it boosts bioavailability of nitroglycerin, ketoprofen, diclofenac and micro-encapsulated systems; perfumery and hair care benefit from its gloss-enhancing, tack-reducing finish; beyond personal care, IPM functions as an industrial lubricant, polymer plasticizer, ink and coating additive, non-toxic solvent for food extraction, antifoam agent, and compatibility enhancer with mild antimicrobial action in veterinary and agrochemical formulations.
