    Guaiacol (CAS 90-05-1) is a naturally occurring aromatic compound with a mild smoky odor that finds diverse applications: as an expectorant and antitussive in pharmaceuticals; as a key flavor intermediate for the semisynthetic production of vanillin to impart vanilla notes to foods; as a contributor to the smoky profile of beverages such as whisky and roasted coffee; in cosmetics and perfumery for warm woody accords; as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of epoxy resins, antioxidants, dyes, and agrochemicals; as a peroxidase indicator in biochemical assays; as a mild antiseptic in dentistry; and as an essential component of liquid smoke preparations used for food preservation.
