  • Applications

4-Hydroxybutanoic acid lactone (GBL, CAS 96-48-0) is a highly polar solvent widely applied in electronic cleaning and industrial degreasing, a key intermediate for making N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, other pyrrolidones, PBT and polyurethane polymers, a starting material in pharmaceutical, flavor and agrochemical synthesis, an electrolyte additive for lithium batteries, a viscosity modifier in paints, inks, paint strippers and extraction solvent in analytical science, while being strictly regulated because it can bioconvert to GHB and thus has potential for misuse.
