Applications
Ethyl cinnamate (CAS 103-36-6) is a naturally occurring fragrant ester found in cinnamon and various fruits, employed broadly in perfumery to impart warm, sweet, fruity nuances to fine fragrances, air-freshening compositions and scented candles; in the flavor industry to reproduce vanilla-cinnamon notes in candies, baked goods, beverages and chewing gum; in cosmetics to soften and mask raw-material odors in creams, lipsticks and shampoos while adding a delicate scent; in pharmaceuticals as a flavoring excipient for syrups and chewable tablets and as a candidate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent; in paints and plastics as a high-boiling solvent that improves film gloss; in agriculture as a semiochemical for insect lures and a post-harvest preservative; and as a valuable intermediate for synthesizing cinnamate derivatives used as UV absorbers, photoinitiators, fluorescent materials and other organic optoelectronic compounds under active research.
