Applications
Ethanol (CAS 64-17-5), also called ethyl alcohol, is a fast-evaporating polar solvent fully miscible with water, widely used as a biofuel and gasoline oxygenate/blendstock (E10–E85) to boost octane and promote cleaner combustion; as a solvent in paints, inks, coatings, adhesives, cosmetics, and perfumes; as a pharmaceutical excipient and extraction medium for flavors, herbal tinctures, and vanilla; as an antiseptic for hand/surface sanitizers at 60–90% and as a laboratory cleaner; as a chemical feedstock (to ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, acetals, acetaldehyde, acetic acid; to ethylene via dehydration) for downstream derivatives; in alcoholic beverages under strict regulation; for tissue preservation/fixation and electronics cleaning; in medicine as an antidote for methanol/ethylene glycol poisoning; and in de-icing fluids for automotive glass; it is commonly sold denatured for technical uses and can be produced by biomass fermentation, while safety considerations include high flammability, explosive vapors, skin/eye irritation, and toxicity if ingested in large amounts.
