Applications
cis-beta-Copaene (CAS 18252-44-3) is a natural sesquiterpene present in many essential oils; in practice it is used chiefly as an analytical reference and fragrance benchmark: a GC–MS/GC×GC standard to build retention-index libraries, qualify chromatographic (including chiral) columns, quantify/profile terpenoids, and authenticate essential oils/botanicals by detecting adulteration; in flavor and fragrance R&D it serves as a reference contributor to woody–resinous–spicy nuances and as a building block for designing new accords, although direct formulation use is limited by supply and stability; in ecology and agriculture it is studied as a component of semiochemical blends that influence tephritid fruit fly behavior and broader plant–insect interactions; in biosynthesis and synthesis it is a target/model for probing sesquiterpene cyclases, carbocation rearrangements, and optimizing chiral separations; in natural-products pharmacology and metabolomics, purified material acts as a control for in vitro screening of typical sesquiterpene activities and for annotating omics signals; it is also monitored as a VOC from plant emissions and from essential-oil products in indoor environments.
