    Beta-Selinene (CAS 17066-67-0) is a natural sesquiterpene hydrocarbon found in many essential oils, notably reported in celery seed oil and other Apiaceae sources; with warm, woody, herbal, slightly peppery and celery-like facets, it is widely used as a fragrance and flavor ingredient in perfumery, cosmetics, household care and food to add depth, roundness and persistence to woody–herbal–amber accords. In flavor and fragrance R&D, beta-selinene helps fine-tune celery-like and balsamic nuances and can serve as a substrate for biocatalysis/biotransformation to oxygenated derivatives (e.g., selinenol, selinenone) with distinct odor profiles. In analytics and research, it is employed as a reference/marker in GC–MS for identification, quantification and authentication of essential oils, supporting quality control, traceability and plant chemotaxonomy, and it has been investigated for ecological semiochemical roles as well as in vitro bioactivities such as antimicrobial and antioxidant effects within essential-oil systems. In product development, considerations include stability, compatibility and microencapsulation to improve odor performance, and it is sometimes evaluated as a supportive component in essential-oil-based insect-repellent formulations, subject to formulation design and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
