Applications
(E)-(-)-alpha-Bergamotene (CAS 13474-59-4) is a chiral sesquiterpene hydrocarbon found in many essential oils (e.g., bergamot and other aromatic plants) with key applications: as a fragrance and flavor ingredient imparting fresh woody–citrus, herbal, mildly spicy nuances and for reconstituting natural oil signatures and tobacco/tea/beverage accords; as a reference standard and marker in GC–MS/GC×GC and enantioselective GC for identification, quantitation, authenticity, and enantiomeric-purity control of essential oils; as a semiochemical in ecological and agricultural research because it is a plant-emitted volatile that attracts pollinators and recruits natural enemies of herbivores, enabling lure-based trapping, behavioral assays, and push–pull IPM strategies; as a chiral building block/intermediate for assembling sesquiterpene frameworks; and as a model compound in plant physiology and atmospheric chemistry (VOC oxidation, SOA formation) and in controlled-release/encapsulation studies, with use aligned to applicable fragrance and food-additive safety guidelines.
