Raspberry Ketone, commonly known by names such as Frambinone or Oxyphenylon, is an important material that brings a characteristic berry note to the fragrance industry. It is nature-identical in origin and is found in red raspberries, black raspberries, and cranberries, but it is produced mainly in synthetic form to solve the cost problem. Extracting natural Raspberry Ketone requires an enormous quantity of fresh fruit, making it extremely expensive, so the synthetic version emerged as an ideal economic solution that helped make this note widely accessible.
Description
Appearing as a white crystalline powder, this material gives off a sweet, warm aroma that realistically evokes raspberry jam, blended with subtle powdery and light woody facets. Belonging to the fruity odor group and the berry family, Raspberry Ketone works mainly in the heart note, extending into the base. With strong odor intensity, good diffusion, and lasting power that can remain on a blotter for many weeks, it serves as an excellent fixative for fruit notes, which are usually very volatile. At the same time, it is also an effective modifier, helping add warmth and roundness to floral structures. In perfumery, it is often used to build raspberry, strawberry, and cherry accords, and pairs especially well with Ionones, Vanilla, musks, and white floral notes such as jasmine or tuberose. Because it is a solid powder, Raspberry Ketone must be dissolved in safe solvents such as DPG, TEC, or Ethanol at 10% or 1% so that perfumers can use it more easily and control the dosage more precisely.
Applications
In terms of applications, this material appears in countless products, from perfumes, scented candles, and skincare cosmetics to soaps and food flavorings. Under IFRA safety standards, Raspberry Ketone is not subject to strict restrictions, and practical use levels typically range from 0.1% to 5% of the total fragrance oil. Although it is not known for phototoxicity and does not require mandatory allergen declaration on labels, users should note that its chemical structure can easily discolor to pink or brown when exposed to alkaline environments or metal ions. For that reason, storage in airtight, non-metal packaging away from light is essential. Thanks to its ability to faithfully recreate the sweetness of berries, Raspberry Ketone has become a key material in many well-known products, from the iconic Givenchy Hot Couture perfume to familiar raspberry-scented body care lines from Bath & Body Works.
