Nerolidol (CAS# 7212-44-4) is a linear sesquiterpene alcohol occurring naturally in neroli, jasmine, tea tree and various tropical flower and wood essential oils. In its pure form, Nerolidol is a clear to pale yellow liquid with light viscosity and a soft, deep, slightly sweet odour that blends white floral facets with fresh citrus notes and a subtle warm woody background.
In fragrance compositions, Nerolidol is used as a modifier and effective fixative across many olfactive families: floral, citrus, woody, green and herbal. It smooths out sharp citrus top notes, reduces harshness, and extends the soft diffusion of the heart and base. Its presence lends a silky, fluid texture to the fragrance structure, supporting a seamless transition between white florals (orange blossom, jasmine, muguet, ylang) and woody–ambery bases.
Thanks to its low volatility and good stability, Nerolidol is suitable for both fine fragrances and home fragrance products such as candles, reed diffusers, room sprays and linen sprays. At appropriate dosage, it enhances longevity on skin, fabric and porous surfaces without overpowering the main accords, acting in the background to round out and deepen the overall scent.
In fragranced cosmetics and personal care products (shower gels, shampoos, lotions, perfumed creams, deodorants, etc.), Nerolidol brings a clean, pleasant floral–citrus softness that feels premium and refined. Its character is understated rather than loud or aggressive, making it ideal for formulas that aim for a modern, elegant scent signature suitable for everyday use.
Nerolidol is a versatile choice for perfumers when a material is needed that can play both a structural role (modifying, linking, fixing) and contribute a recognisable olfactive nuance: soft white florals, light citrus brightness and smooth woods.
