Nerolidol, also known as Peruviol, is a valuable sesquiterpene alcohol found widely in natural essential oils such as orange blossom, jasmine, and lavender. As a slightly viscous liquid ranging from colorless to pale yellow, this material offers an olfactory experience that is gentle yet full of depth. Beyond its natural origin, synthetic Nerolidol is now also favored for its high stability, playing a key role in recreating the most natural, rustic, and authentic floral notes for commercial products.
Description
In the art of fragrance construction, Nerolidol belongs to the floral-woody family and serves as an important base note thanks to its remarkably persistent substantivity. In Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, Steffen Arctander described it as having a soft woody-floral odor reminiscent of lily. In formulations, it acts not only as a fixative that helps extend the life of a fragrance, but also as an excellent modifier that softens sharp floral notes and creates a smoother transition between accords. The combination of Nerolidol with Linalool and Benzyl Acetate has long been considered a classic formula for building a vivid jasmine note. To optimize performance, it can be used neat or diluted to 10% in safe solvents such as DPG or TEC.
Applications
Thanks to its versatility, Nerolidol is commonly used in perfumes, scented candles, and skincare products ranging from leave-on to rinse-off applications. Manufacturers often maintain usage levels from 1% to 5% in line with IFRA recommendations to ensure a high level of consumer safety. Because of its good heat stability and lasting odor, it is also a preferred choice for soap and cleaning products. Prestigious fragrances such as Chanel No. 19 demonstrate the appeal of Nerolidol in creating fresh, airy, green facets. To preserve optimal quality, it should be stored in a tightly closed container away from light, so that the material retains its distinctive olfactory character intact.
